Saying yes.
Another rainy dismal day here on the East Coast.....with a happy surprise.
I had a great power vinyasa class today, feeling much more focused than yesterday. After getting the little guy off to soccer I enjoyed the majority of the stationary yoga class. Coming out of class I was getting my shoes on and I noticed that I had a voice mail from my mentor, which was unusual as I had just seen her yesterday and had time planned with her on Thursday night.
She said that the Y right near by had called the Spirit of Yoga saying that they were looking for a yoga teacher. She told me to get over there and try to get my foot in the door, and not mention to any of the other TT's that I was doing this. She knows that my game plan is to teach in gyms right now......and see what happens from there. I do NOT want to teach at ACAC (too close to home, I need to go places where everyone doesn't know me and know that I'm brand new at this) and I just think that the gym environment is where I can best fit in and gather the experience that I need before moving into studios, if I can.
I considered going home and getting dressed up, putting some make up on.....but decided that this (my yoga clothed make up free self) was how I look 90% of the week, so I might as well show up as my most authentic self. To boot I had Jake trailing along :). I went for it! I went in, introduced myself, said that Sarah (the studio manager) had sent me in response to their inquiry looking for a yoga teacher. I briefly spoke with one of the hiring managers for fitness, though not the woman who hires specifically for yoga. She asked me about my availability and I said M, W, and F mornings, most evenings (babysitters to teach yoga, I'll barely break even but it will be so worth it!! :) If it is an earlier class I can also use the Y's fantastic childcare, its a new facility and its beautiful) and weekends. She said that they were looking for someone for flow classes and gentle yoga classes, Tuesday nights and especially weekends. Fantastic. I can do that. I know I can do that.
So? I filled out the paperwork as they have a slew of background checks that need to happen. I have no idea if I could bluff my way in the door there as they have a pretty demanding real housewives clientele similar to ACAC's and I would really have to get my vinyasa game up to their standards.......but I think that I can vinyasa their little lulu'd butts into a happy place, I really do. And gentle yoga is essentially the beginner class that is being pounded into our heads.....with some extra restorative poses and bolsters thrown in.
Who knows what will happen. Its a long shot as I haven't even gotten certified yet. Regardless I'm proud of myself for showing up, for having the courage to walk in there and put my "I'm a yoga teacher!" face on. I'm also honored that Sue has the confidence in me to send me out there and to tell me to use her as a reference ~ that alone is a huge confidence booster.
Tomorrow I'm having three friends from class over to practice teach in my new faux studio in the basement. It should be fun and very helpful.
Baby steps towards being legit, ladies, baby steps.

ReplyDeletethat is awesome! I *love* teaching at our Y! I know they may vary from place to place but it's a great organization to work for - often very different from a typical gym :) and it's really good experience. congrats on the opportunity, hope it blossoms for you!
ReplyDeleteI wish your blog had a like button. :o)
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! Love that your teacher has your back and that you were courageous enough to take advantage of the opportunity. Love that you put yourself out there on the spot. Brave and fierce. :)
